Fusion PPT’s article “The Physical-to-Virtual Cookbook” has been featured in Network Computing
Fusion PPT, a recognized cloud computing strategy and technology firm, announces today that its article “The Physical-to-Virtual Cookbook”” written by CTO Don Magrogan has been featured in Network Computing.
Legacy applications and services are tough to move to virtualized environments. Enterprises struggle with a physical to virtual (P2V) migration given the unique application by application analysis that is required to move the environment.
In this multi part series, we present a cookbook approach to the steps and tools that are required to successfully migrate application from a traditional physical data center environment to a virtual one, based on a migration we conducted for a national telecommunication company. We also highlight some of the pitfalls along the way and how to overcome them.
Organizations must determine if P2V makes sense for their organizations and how the move will affect the overall architecture of the data center. First, we needed to determine what type of environment we were working with and in our client’s case the data center was maxing out, given these constraints virtualization was a sensible option. We then analyzed all the technical details and made sure we understood all the applications and devices that were already in the data center.
In addition to the technical details, we sent out questionnaires and conducted interviews with key stakeholders to determine if there were areas for improvement. We found this to be an effective way to communicate with the client’s key users about the migration and to verify the information we collected. In part 2 of this series, we will delve more into application dependency mapping and gathering performance metrics.
