Fusion PPT’s Article “Hybrid Cloud: Details Matter” featured in August 2014 issue of InformationWeek Tech Digest
Fusion PPT’s article “Hybrid Cloud: Details Matter,” written by CTO Don Magrogan, has been published in the August 2014 issue of InformationWeek Tech Digest. Magrogan, a seasoned engineer and IT manager with hands-on experience in leading IT and cloud computing initiatives, discusses the benefits of adopting a hybrid cloud in your business, and provides his insight on how to address the challenges that a hybrid cloud setup presents.
Information Week’s most recent State of Cloud Computing Survey reveals that 79% of those respondents currently using cloud services, employ multiple providers. When you pair this with a recent Gartner report that projects that nearly 50% of large companies will have deployed hybrid cloud by the end of 2017, it is clear that the hybrid cloud adoption trend is here to stay, at least for now. A hybrid cloud system can provide the business with significant benefits, such as increased control over applications and data, combined with the ability to burst resources into the public cloud as needed. Hybrid clouds are good for companies that want to take advantage of the public cloud, but don’t trust that their data will be secure enough, or that find that some of their applications are cheaper and/or better performing on the private cloud.
Magrogan remarks, “Hybrid cloud is here to stay. You get the niceties that cloud provides – agility, cost savings, and scale –while still feeling that warm sense of control over the important information that resides on your systems.” However, these capabilities raise sticky technical, cost, management, and governance issues that need to be carefully addressed before deploying a hybrid cloud system, if you want that system to be sustainable and effective.
“Companies want seamless interoperability between clouds, and the ability to leverage one provisioning and operational framework,” continues Magrogan. “A hybrid cloud, if properly architected, provides these functions. It’s worth getting that architecture right, because almost no big companies rely on a 100% public cloud model.”
In his article, Magrogan examines the issues that arise when considering the move to the hybrid cloud, and provides his thoughts on items to consider when building a hybrid system for your business. Magrogan continues, “it is worth doing a thorough assessment of your internal systems and the applications that run on them; we can promise that they won’t all be cloud ready […] this is a great time to undertake an application consolidation initiative.”
